Pisa International Airport (PSA): Located about 220 km away, Pisa's airport is a major hub for low-cost European airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet. Likely your cheapest bet.
Florence Amerigo Vespucci Airport (FLR): Located about 120 km away, Florence's airport is another good option, particularly for guests arriving from Europe, as it has a wider selection of carriers. It is generally more expensive than Pisa.
Rome Fiumicino International Airport (FCO): As Italy's largest airport, Rome offers the most international flight options. It is located about 230 km from Cortona and is a great choice for guests traveling from outside of Europe.
Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi - Umbria International Airport (PEG): This is the closest airport to Cortona, located about 60 km away. It's a small airport with limited flight options, primarily serving flights from other European cities. (We’ve never flown here but Google suggested it as a potential option).
Renting a Car: This is the most flexible option for guests, allowing you to easily get around the area - this is recommended if you'd like to explore rural Tuscany. Drive times from the above airports are: Florence (1.5h), Pisa (2h) or Rome (2.5h).
AMEX Caution: If you're using an AMEX credit card to make a deposit for the car rental, double check it's accepted at the desk and not only online - we've been stung by this in the past.
Train: Guests can take a train from the major airports to one of the two main train stations that serve Cortona.
Camucia-Cortona (recommended): This station is at the base of the hill, about 3 km from the town of Cortona. From here, you can take a taxi or a local bus up to the town. Bar La Stazione (outside the station) can help arrange a taxi and will also have bus time tables – we’ll also provide taxi numbers nearer the time.
Terontola-Cortona: This station is approximately 11 km away. Taxis and buses are available to get into Cortona – but we generally recommend Camucia-Cortona.
Additional train details:
Tram first: Many airports require taking a tram to reach the main departure train station
Tickets: Can be purchased on https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html; Tickets are typically tied to a specific departure time rather than flexible pass that can be used throughout the day.
Private Transfer: Private transfer services can also be booked in advance from any of the airports. Recommend for long haul travellers who don’t wish to drive jet-lagged!
Wedding Day Shuttle: For your convenience on the wedding day, we will provide a bus to transport guests to and from Cortona and our venue. More details on the timing and pick-up/drop-off points will be shared closer to the date.
Taxi Information: For guests who choose not to rent a car and are staying outside of the town, we will provide a list of local taxi numbers for your use closer to the time.
